Out of a dreamy abyss, Desert Daze unleashes their 2024 lineup. After taking time off hosting the annual psychedelic pilgrimage in 2023, the Desert Daze crew dedicated their energy and resources to provide a legendary lineup like no other. Many visionaries return for this year’s festivities as well as a slew of newcomers dawning exceptionally new sounds.
From heavy hitting headliners like The Mars Volta, SLEEP, and De La Soul to underground staples such as Jesus Piece, Wine Lips, and Daiistar, Desert Daze 2024 is a music lover’s delight, chock-full of genre bending virtuosos and immersive visual arts. Visual virtuosos like Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show and Slim Reaper will be carrying their freak flags forward as the spirit of Desert Daze is lifted to new heights. A hefty dose of guest speakers, art installations, DJs, and camping antics will submerge festival goers in a weekend wave of pure bliss while connecting the community to a more widespread audience.
This year boasts new lakeside camping options, carefully curated stages and remote midnight messages from cinematic icons like David Lynch. Whether you’re a seasoned DD vet or a bright eyed first timer, 2024 is the year to indulge yourself in the ever expansive, continually unfolding Desert Daze experience that so many have come to love.
Our team here at Clear Vision Collective has been attending the Daze since 2017 and even started up our outlet during the aftermath of Tame Impala’s infamous stormy set in 2018, so Desert Daze is intrinsically intertwined into our story and our overall passion/love for global music and DIY culture.
To all those who wish to attend this year’s celebration, we offer you CVC’s Insider’s Guide to Desert Daze; Highlighting our writers’ top lineup picks and providing some insight into the must-see projector artists and stages.
The Lineup:
SpaceyYs Picks (Spenser Judd)
Acid Tongue: Headed by the Co-Founder of Seattle’s Freakout Fest Guy Keltner, Acid Tongue supplies rowdy guitar licks and a psychedelic garage rock sound that amplifies the spirit of DIY as they globetrot their way around the U.S. and beyond. Let their latest single, “Acid on the Dancefloor” sear into your brain before catching them crashland The Outer Space stage.
Minami Deutsch: Cream of the crop Krautrock from Japan, these “repetition freaks” are one of GuruGuru Brain’s (Kikagaku Moyo’s indie label) most sought after bands. Fresh off a European summer trek with a 16-date Autumn tour on the horizon, this will be the group’s first trip to the West Coast, so prepare to cherish this monumental moment and let the memories stroll along.
Temples: UK-based psych pop superstars will be unleashing their debut album “Sun Structures” in its entirety. With earworm-inducing riffs and shiny vocal harmonies to fuzzed out phasers and beats, this project is a staple for the neo-psych community. An amped up Lance of Mad Alchemy stated they were his favorite set to run liquid lights for during DD 2019, so it’s safe to say that Temples may be joining the Mad Alchemist for another mystical live music masterpiece.
Boogarins: Hooked at first listen, I discovered their single “Foimal” as a college radio DJ for KCPR. They tapped into the flow for a mesmerizing main stage set at Desert Daze 2018 and even mingled with fans post set, signing records for fans and soaking up the sun down at the beach. From Levitation (Austin,TX) to Hypnosis (MX), Boogarins will be traveling across out West this fall, super stoked to catch these Brazilian psych heads bring their energy to Lake Perris and unveil some new transmissions.
Honorable Mentions:
Wolf Eyes (Jazzy Heshers ft. DIY meme-ologist @inzane_johnny)
Snooper (Egg Punk maestros deep fried out of Nashville, TN)
Danny's Picks
Thundercat: Busting out some funky grooves, Dude had an insanely tasty set at Shabang SLO earlier this year. After noticing him play Levitation fest years back, it was only a matter of time until he stopped by Lake Perris. Excited to see what songs or guests he brings out and his stage design is going to be on another level for sure.
Tropical Fuck Storm: Bringing the Aussies out to the Daze again. Hyped to hear their enigmatic post-punk performance, happy to see more Flightless Records artists get to Cali.
Souls of Mischief: Hip-Hop legends that astounded me to read their name on the line up. Beyond grateful that more old school artists are catchin’ the spotlight at fests especially. If you’re unfamiliar, kick back and tune into “93 til’ Infinity”, it’s a timeless take to say the least.
Molchat Doma: These electronic wizards are gonna shake shit up at Lake Perris. I’m grateful to see emerging international acts pull up to the desert. Coming straight from Russia, these goth icons are going to attract a rush of eager fans ready to vibe like it’s the Monster Mash.
Jack White: An American classic. Our faces will melt in unison upon seein’ this firestarter shred. Who knows, may we witness some White Stripes throwbacks or some songs from other spin-off bands like The Dead Weather? (The Kills are also shredding this year, so the odds may be in our favor) The Ty Segall of the early 2000s, Mr. Third Man Records, is a truly renown artist who’s bound to bring some star-studded shine to this year’s Daze.
Honorable Mentions:
100 Gecs will be a Hyperpop spectacle and I’m glad to see Shintaro Sakamoto making the journey to grace the DD stage.
Projector Picks:
Stranger Liquids: SoCal-based visual production collective that supplies liquid light visuals for all types of DIY gatherings across the coast. Carrying the 60s tradition to a modern age, they’ve taken part in shaping the current culture, immersing local fests like Orange County’s Nothing Fest and Long Beach’s Happy Sundays in a kaleidoscopic symphony of colors and textures.
Bill Gazer: Long Beach-based visual artist who’s added eye candy and atmosphere to countless gatherings. A DJing do-gooder well known for video mapping, crafting glitchy patternscapes, and being a helping hand for the current waves of psych bands coming in and out of California.
Moirebender: LA-based analog-loving Video Artist who’s been glitching out audience for years, becoming an underground legend for their role as Beat Cinema’s resident visualizer and their illustration work under the alias @diazprints.
Catch them in and around Lake Perris for VHS-glitch bliss, who knows there may even be some late-night campground experimentations.
Stages:
The Outer Space: Situated in the Campgrounds, this stage is an elevation from the previously named Mystic Bazaar. With a range of ripping sets and workshops, festival goers who plan on camping will be in for a treat. This years lineup includes Morning Yoga, modular Sound Baths, Thursday’s welcoming ceremony with White Fence + More and the yearly Desert Daze send off with JJUUJJUU & Friends.
Gold Diggers In the Desert: The ever-enchanting LA-based venue/recording studio Gold-Diggers, known for intimate sets and the Micro-Dazed residencies, is packing out to Perris for the first time. Not too sure what to expect stage-wise or festival location, but it’s going to be a cozy experience with celestial sets from Tommy Guerrero, Jeff Parker, Mong Tong and more.
